PACE & MDHearing: Affordable hearing aids and telemed for PACE programs

Who is MDHearing?

MDHearing was founded 16 years ago by a Chicago ENT upset with the high cost of hearing aids. Headquartered in Chicago with employees across the U.S., we’ve spent the past decade and a half selling and supporting more than 2 million hearing aids direct-to-consumer.

Trusted by Humana and other leading Medicare Advantage programs since 2023, MDHearing launched its PACE solution in 2025 with One Senior Care—providing a more affordable, simpler, higher-care solution to the market.

Industry leading telemedicine

MDHearing's audiologists and hearing professionals provide hearing care, counseling, and hearing aid assistance virtually via an easy, HIPAA compliant online video conference.

With the VOLT MAX, our specialists can also remotely fine-tune a patient’s hearing aids over the internet using the same audiological standards followed in traditional clinics. Each adjustment is tailored to their unique hearing needs, ensuring a fast, easy, and custom fit.

How it works: Simple & convenient

The hearing test

MDHearing provides an iPad-based hearing test so PACE staff can assist participants in doing their annual hearing test.

The test takes 5-10 minutes and is available any weekday—no advance scheduling needed.

MDHearing provides all testing equipment at no cost, including data connectivity. There is no technical integration needed, or cost for the hearing test.

The consultation

If the participant shows hearing loss, an MDHearing licensed hearing professional performs a no-cost telemed video consult on the same day, via the same iPad (typically 15-20 minutes).

They will make the best recommendation for the patient, either for hearing aids or a medical referral if an issue is uncovered.

MDHearing delivers all records and billing with the appropriate PACE staff, and provides a dedicated account manager that meets weekly with the PACE team.

Year 1 savings: MDHearing vs. prescription

MDHearing’s average price of $1,000 per set of hearing aids gives dramatic savings vs. prescription hearing aids. Plus, all additional services—consultations, hearing tests, repairs, etc.—are included with MDHearing’s offering.

Long-term savings: Treating hearing loss reduces other health care costs

A study by Johns Hopkins makes a compelling case for helping participants treat hearing loss, reporting that those with untreated hearing loss encountered 46% higher total health care costs—as well as 50% more hospital stays, increased risk of emergency department visits, and longer length of hospital stays.

According to the study, if a participant treats his/her hearing loss, the health plan will save (per participant) $3,518 after 2 years, $10,271 after 5 years, and $20,403 after 10 years.

How does hearing loss increase health care costs?

Untreated hearing loss causes multiple negative health outcomes.

DEMENTIA

Johns Hopkins found that untreated hearing loss greatly increased the occurrence of dementia:

  • Even just mild hearing loss doubled the risk of dementia
  • Moderate hearing loss tripled the risk
  • Severe hearing loss multiplied dementia risk by five.

DEPRESSION AND FALLS

A JAMA report showed that those with untreated hearing loss encountered:

  • 41% higher risk of depression
  • 30% greater risk for falls

Frequently Asked Questions

How accessible is MDHearing’s staff for hearing tests and consults? What is scheduling like?

MDHearing’s staff of 20+ licensed hearing professionals is online and ready to help any business day of the year. Most of the staff has 10+ years of experience in a hearing clinic, and brings a wealth of knowledge. Scheduling is done via a simple calendar form, and our staff has ample availability.

Can staff take iPads to participants' homes for testing?

Yes, your staff can take the iPad hearing tests with them on home visits. Each iPad comes with its own data service, so no extra equipment or connectivity is needed.

Does MDHearing bill for things like hearing tests, consultations, repairs, etc.?

No, the cost of the hearing aids covers all of that. Kits of common maintenance items like tubing and tips are available to buy if your staff wants to help service the aids.

How easy is billing, reporting, and getting participant health information?

MDHearing provides a single point of contact for all billing, reporting, data exchange, and any other communication. Your account manager will check weekly and can do in-person visits and training when necessary. Reporting is provided via real time and scheduled reports.

How do your aids compare against prescription aids?

Participants receive MDHearing’s high-end models, which often provide more functionality and performance than entry-level prescription aids. ~94% of normal age-related hearing loss can be treating by MDHearing’s OTC hearing aids. When a participant has severe/profound loss, MDHearing will make a medical referral for high-powered prescription aids.
