Mother’s Day is right around the corner. What greater gift can you give your mom than some quality time with the people she loves the most?
Whether you plan a special activity or just spend some quality time together at home, there are plenty of options she will love. Here are some ideas to make this Mother’s Day unique.
1. Picnic at a park or the beach.
After being cooped up inside all winter, it’s rejuvenating to get outdoors for some fresh air and to enjoy the sounds of nature. Pack up a blanket and picnic lunch and take mom to a secluded park or beach. Singing birds and the scent of spring flowers or the relaxing sound of the waves lapping on the shore all celebrate the new season.
If Mom prefers stay home, take the picnic to her place and make her day feel special. Maybe you could set up a bird feeder together so she can enjoy the birds all year long!
2. Visit a botanical garden or do some gardening at home.
Maybe visiting a local botanical garden is more Mom’s speed. The quiet beauty of nature might just inspire you both to spruce up her garden, too. If you’re both up to it, pick up gardening supplies on your way home and spend the afternoon preparing her garden for a new season.
3. Grab a drink at a coffee shop.
Taking Mom to a coffee shop will get her out so you can treat her to coffee or tea without the background noise often found in restaurants. This provides a great opportunity for you both to try something new and chat without being interrupted or rushed.
4. Solve a puzzle or play a game.
Play a few rounds of cards. Solve a puzzle together. Play a board game. What may seem to you like a simple activity can be relaxing, therapeutic, or a fun change of pace from the typical day-to-day for your mother. Choose a game you both enjoy and spend some time catching up while you play.
5. See a movie at the theater.
Want to see the latest and greatest on the big screen? Many theaters offer devices to amplify audio, provide closed captioning, or are telecoil compatible. If your mother wears hearing aids equipped with a telecoil, she can link her hearing aids to the theater sound system and the sound will be delivered directly to her ears, eliminating background noise from those people who snack loudly or insist upon talking throughout the movie.
6. Explore a museum.
Museums are a great quiet outing. Many museums frequently feature new or rotating exhibits so even if your mom has been there before, there’s a good chance there will be something new to see.
Additionally, some exhibits and museum theaters are also equipped with induction loops for telecoils for hearing aid wearers.
7. Treat her to a spa day.
There’s no better way to spoil mom than a special day of relaxation and pampering. Get her a manicure or a pedicure or treat her to a massage. She’ll be feeling beautiful, relaxed, and refreshed.
8. Make her favorite home-cooked meal.
Often, having dinner or brunch in a restaurant can be difficult, overwhelming, and unenjoyable for those with hearing loss. But you can make a special meal without going out. Put on her favorite music and whip up her favorite meal or an old family recipe as a heartfelt alternative to noisy, crowded buffets.
This could also be a good time to talk about hearing loss and hearing aids. Remember to keep it lighthearted and don’t push too hard, as this is a day focused on celebrating Mom and how wonderful she is, not the things she’s missing.
It doesn’t matter what you do, just that you do it.
Whether you go out or stay in, simply spending time together will mean a lot to your mom. After all, it’s a special day and she should be made to feel just as special as you know she is!
If you do decide to talk about hearing aids, be sure to emphasize the positive effects on quality of life. Mom’s a special woman and deserves to enjoy the best life she can.
