COVID-19: A message from our CEO

Doug Breaker here, I am the CEO of MDHearingAid. Like you, I am monitoring the ongoing spread of the COVID-19 virus. I recognize the uncertainty in times like these and would like to take a moment to address some concerns you may have.

Since launching 11 years ago we have weathered many trials and tribulations, but nothing so complex as the challenge the COVID-19 virus presents.

As a country, we have survived world wars, the Great Depression, the Civil War, 9/11, the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 and much more. We will survive this. It may take many months, but eventually the sun will rise once more.

MDHearingAid launched with the idea that hearing help should be available to all, not just those that can afford to spend thousands out-of-pocket to get what should cost much less. We stay committed to that vision today, and will do whatever it takes to keep helping all that suffer from hearing loss get the help they need.

Direct-to-Consumer – No Need to Leave Your House

With Costco temporarily closing their hearing centers and some clinics doing so as well, you may be worried about your hearing health. At the time that I write this, multiple states have issued “shelter in place” orders, or plan to. We salute them. Minimizing your contact with others protects yourself, and limits the spread of the virus.

Maintaining your health should be a top priority during times like this, and untreated hearing loss degrades your quality of life, and the quality of life for others around you.

Not only is hearing absolutely essential to your awareness, studies suggest improving your hearing decreases your risk of an injury from a fall, lowers your risk of mental decline, and improves your overall long-term health.

At MDHearingAid, we’re dedicated to providing you the hearing you need—without you ever needing to leave your house.

As a direct-to-consumer online hearing aid company, we sell and ship directly to our customers. Not only does this allow us to keep our prices much lower than hearing clinics, but it also allows us to remove the storefronts and face-to-face appointments. This means you don’t have to risk going anywhere in order to get a high-quality hearing solution.

UPDATE 7/17/20: We are currently fully operational and shipping on time. However, some customers are reporting delays in delivery from their local post offices. Please allow a few extra days for shipping. 

New Procedures to Combat COVID-19

The health and well-being of our customers and staff is our first priority. As such, we have implemented a number of steps to protect the health of our MDHearingAid family.

All employees that can work from home are, which is the vast majority of our employees. For those on our shipping and assembly teams, we’ve implemented a combination of staggered shifts, distancing, limited access points, aggressive cleaning regimens, and other efforts to minimize the risk of infection.

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated there is no evidence to support that the coronavirus can be transmitted through goods:

In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods.”

We take providing affordable hearing very seriously, it’s our reason for existence. We’ve made sure that all of our hearing aid models are still available and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure our shipping operations remain safe and as timely as possible.

Dedicated Customer Service

Our U.S.-based support team has shifted to working from home and is continuing to provide you with world-class support. Each of our support staff has received careful training from professional audiologists, and will walk you through your hearing aid set-up process or answer any questions you have.

We offer telephone support Monday through Friday and 24-hour email support, so you can contact a customer representative at any time of the day or night.

Telemedicine and Hearing Aids

We’ve invested deeply in our telemedicine capabilities over the last few years. Our MDHearingAid CORE model integrates with our sophisticated MDHearing app to create a customized hearing profile unique to you. The app also gives us the ability to remotely program and fine-tune your hearing aid settings–just email or all our support and we’ll make the updates for you. We’re working on expanding our telemedicine and custom fitting capabilities to other models this year, stay tuned for news on that regard.

Although our daily lives will likely be disrupted for some time, the world has made it through other rough times and we’ll make it through this one. Let’s pull together, keep each other safe, and this too shall pass.
