FDA Seeks To Make Low Cost OTC Hearing Aids Readily Available To Millions Of Americans

New FDA hearing aid guidelines
Has lack of easy access to affordable over-the-counter hearing aids prevented you from getting the hearing help you need? That’s changing, thanks to new FDA guidelines. Earlier this month, the FDA announced it will no longer require individuals over 18 years of age to receive a medical evaluation or sign a waiver prior to purchasing most hearing aids. The FDA also announced its commitment to creating a category for over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids that could open the way for innovative and lower-cost products becoming available to millions of consumers.
Who needs hearing aids?
This is great news for anyone considering purchasing hearing aids for themselves or loved ones. Americans are working and living longer, and the need for affordable hearing aids will continue to increase. 30 million Americans suffer from some form of hearing loss; yet fewer than 1-in-5 get the hearing aids they need to live fuller, richer lives because most hearing aids are expensive.
The number of Americans in need of hearing aids will continue to grow; approximately 10,000 Americans turn 65 every single day. It is worth noting that 25% of Americans over the age of 60 have some degree of hearing loss. That jumps to more than 50% for those over the age of 70, and up to 75% for those 80 and older.
Affordable hearing aids
MDHearingAid has sold more than 250,000 hearing aids to people who might not have been able to meet the expense of managing their hearing loss. Our goal is to provide affordable, doctor-designed hearing aids to one million people by 2020. By offering “one size fits most” hearing aids, priced as low as $199 per ear, MDHearingAid aims to save Americans hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process of reaching its goal. The national average of $2,300 per aid keeps hearing aids out of reach for many. Since 2009, MDHearingAid has been leading the direct-to-consumer hearing aid market by making medical-grade hearing aids affordable and accessible to those who need them the most.
The MDHearingAid line of hearing aids fit most adult ears comfortably and come pre-programmed with user-adjustable settings.
