Our 7 Favorite Sounds of Summer

Summer is in full swing, and no matter how young or old, it’s a season cherished by all. Whether relaxing at the beach, camping in the woods, or barbecuing in the backyard, there’s plenty to enjoy this time of year. Here are our top seven sounds you don’t want to miss this summer:

1. Sizzle of a barbecue

Nothing gets an appetite going like the sizzle of meat hitting the grill, and the salivating smell that follows. Whether it’s burgers, steak, chicken, or veggies, everything tastes a little better when it’s grilled.

2. Crackle of a bonfire

Whether you’re camping somewhere remote or enjoying your backyard, gathering around a bonfire is a staple summer pastime. We love listening to the crackling of wood while roasting marshmallows and looking at the stars, all with the perfect hint of warmth on a cool summer night.

3. Chorus of calling insects

Stay with us on this one; we’re not saying we want any insects in our house. But, there is something thoroughly relaxing about the hum of cicadas, crickets, and katydids in the summer air. It’s a soothing sound that can put the mind right to sleep.

4. Crash of ocean waves

The beach provides stimuli for all of the senses: the taste of salt water, the smell of sunscreen, the feeling of sand crunching under your toes, and the beautiful sight of the sun setting into the water. Perhaps the most iconic of all though, is the relaxing sound of waves crashing at the shore.

5. Pitter-patter of a rain shower

We love a good thunderstorm—the crack of thunder, a flash of lightning, and the relief of cooler temperatures after a steady shower. The sound of rain is a natural white noise and is known to be very calming for the mind. It leads to better concentration during mediation or studying, or it can be used to help you relax or sleep.

6. Croak of pond frogs

Have you ever experienced the sound of a chorus of frogs near a pond or wetland? It’s incredible, and almost unbelievable how boisterous a collection of frogs and toads can get as they let out calls. They can even be heard from miles away!

7. Serenade of bird songs

A favorite amongst many is the singsong of birds chatting in the summertime. It’s peaceful, and can be quite the hobby if you’re interested. There’s so much to learn about the wide repertoire of bird songs and calls, all of which vary based on the species and what they’re trying to communicate. Lucky for us, it all sounds like beautiful chorus in our backyards!
